Caroline Davies – England

This will be Caroline’s first stay at Stiwdio Maelor and she is looking forward to spending time writing in Wales. Her two previous books, Convoy and Voices from Stone and Bronze draw upon stories from her family. Convoy was based on the experiences of her taid, Jim Honeybill who was with the Blue Funnel Line and served on the Malta convoys. The opening poem in Voices, The Litany, was inspired by a visit to the war memorial in Machynlleth with her uncle.

During her residency she will be working on a sequence of poems about R. Victor Davies, her great uncle and a native of Llandudno, who was killed at the age of twenty on the opening day of the Battle of Passchendaele. On a visit to Caernarfon Castle in the autumn of 2017 she was thrilled to discover that the book of remembrance in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers Museum was open at the page with his name, although she thinks this may have been because he was in the same battalion as Ellis Humphrey Evans(Hedd Wyn).

Caroline is currently studying for an MA Writing Poetry with the Poetry school in London and the University of Newcastle.
