Roy Willingham-England

All his life Roy has been drawing and painting landscapes. The representations have been figurative and abstract but tend to hover around the borderline as I am intrigued by how much abstraction is possible before the sense of place is lost.
The employment that has provided him with an income over the years has meant that it has not been possible for him to spend as much time as he would have liked drawing directly from the landscape, but his preference is to understand a landscape by walking through it and drawing from different locations to build up a knowledge of the place that feeds into my work. Because of this he has found that in recent years he has become more concerned with the more formal aspects of his work and the processes involved and the subject matter has become secondary to that. He has started to draw in other aspects that feed into the understanding of a locality such as its history, language and local symbolism.
